13 December 2007: OPTIONS for
providing Ripon City and surrounding villages with new swimming
facilities were last night discussed by members of Harrogate
Borough Council's Cabinet.
Councillors had before them a number of options to bring
swimming and fitness facilities in the City up to the standard of
those provided in Harrogate. This could include
the disposal of the Ripon Spa Baths to fund a new facility adjacent
to the leisure centre on Dallamires Lane.
The Cabinet were minded to recommend this option to all
members of Harrogate Borough Council but decided that first they
wanted to take soundings from Ripon City Council before things are
progressed.
Councillor Pat Jones, Cabinet Member of Cultural Services,
speaking after the meeting said: "There is no
doubt that the City is desperately in need of a new swimming pool
and more fitness facilities.
"Last night we were also being asked to recommend a budget of
over £50,000 for design and planning work before we went out
for full public consultation in January in advance of any planning
application being made. But we felt that this is
such an important project for the City, we need everyone on board
before we begin. We have asked the Head of
Leisure Museums and Arts to set up an early meeting with Ripon City
Councillors so that we can jointly agree a way forward."
It is expected that this meeting will be held in early
January. Discussions will also include proposals
to extend fitness facilities at the leisure
centre. ENDS
