The Gambling Act 2005 (link opens in a new window) replaces the outdated Gaming Act 1968 and puts new procedures in place for gambling. It came into force on 1 September 2007.
 
The Gambling Commission (link opens in a new window) is the new body in charge of controlling gambling throughout the country. It is responsible for giving advice and issuing the following:

Harrogate Borough Council offers advice on, and is responsible for, licensing premises for gambling in the Harrogate district, including the permissions detailed below-
 
 
Licensing objectives
 
All those involved in gambling must work to promote the three gambling licensing objectives. These are -
  • keeping gambling crime free
  • making sure that gambling is fair and open
  • protecting children and vulnerable adults
