
The Mayor is the Chairman of the Borough Council and is the first citizen of the Borough of Harrogate. This is an appointment made by the Council each year in May and the Mayor chairs meetings of full Council.
The Mayor represents the Borough on ceremonial occasions. He/she welcomes international visitors and attends events organised by local people and community groups. It is customary for each Mayor to support their chosen local charities throughout their term of office.
The Mayor also hosts formal and informal functions in the Parlour, the Council Chamber or other venues. The Mayor welcomes groups for a guided tour of the Chamber and Parlour, which includes a brief presentation on the work of the Mayor, the Mayoral Regalia and Civic Mace.
