Harrogate and District Allotment present 'marrow cheque' for £2,000 to Young Carers
18 September 2008 - ALLOTMENT
holders showing at this year's Harrogate and District Allotment
Show have grown more than fruit, vegetables and
flowers. The show, which was held in the Valley
Gardens in August, has raised a staggering £2000 for
charity.
The Mayor of the Borough, Councillor John Fox, who attended
the show is delighted that the Allotment Federation has chosen his
charity, Young Carers, to be benefit this year from the sale and
auction of produce and other fundraising activity at the
event. He said: "The council
gives a lot of support to this event with many staff giving up
their free time. But of course the real workers
are those who sow and seed during the year and are prepared to make
this annual event so successful by showing their produce and
offering advice and assistance to those who are interested in
'growing their own'. Many of their friends and
colleagues also help including those who bake cakes and sell the
raffle tickets."
The Mayor has made the theme of his year in office
"The Volunteer". Young Carers are young people
who care for a parent, grandparent, brother or sister who is ill,
has a disability or experiences mental health, drug or alcohol
issues.
