Abstract Art
Since the beginning of the 20th century, abstract
painting has formed a central stream of modern and contemporary
art.
Harrogate's art collection contains works by such diverse
artists as Surrealist Eileen Agar, Neo-Cubist Markey Robinson and
Vorticist Wyndham Lewis.
Our exhibition shows the many different ways that artists have
explored the abstract form; the influence of the great masters of
the modern age, such as Picasso; recent works that refer to great
modern art movements, and the genius of artists, such as Alan Davie
and Ivon Hitchens, who invent an abstract language all of their
own.
The exhibition will also feature a video presentation or
local artists Simon Crawford and John Creighton at work in their
studios as well as their work.
Curriculum LInks
The exhibition provides a rare opportunity for art students to
engage with abstract art and learn to understand and appreciate
this great modern art form.
