Cars removed from Harrogate's famous Stray
20 October 2008 - Warning notices, which threatened to
tow away cars being sold illegally from public land have worked and
the numbers are down to nearly zero.
In August, Harrogate Borough Council set up a scheme to warn
those operating this unlawful practice from Harrogate's 200 acre
Stray that if they continued to use this protected land as a "car
showroom" then they faced seeing them towed away.
Councillor Don Mackenzie, Cabinet Member for Planning and
Transport, is pleased that the problem has diminished but is
warning anyone thinking about parking cars with For Sale signs next
to the Stray risks being traced. He said: "We
are working in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council's
Trading Standards and we have established links with the Driver
Vehicle Licensing Agency's computerised data-base, which means we
can check on the ownership of vehicles put up for sale.
"Selling cars from the highway as a part of a business
operation is a nuisance recognised in law. The
council is pleased that it has been able to respond to residents'
concerns and complaints by using the Stray Act to remove this
nuisance." ENDS
