Getting on the Electoral Register

In order to get on the Electoral Register you will need to complete a voter registration form.

To get a form sent to you please contact the Electoral Registration Office on 01423 556008 or 01423 556011

During the Autumn we complete an annual canvass of electors.  All addresses in the District will be sent a Voter Registration Form.

Why be on the Electoral Register?

It is a legal requirement to register

To be able to vote in any election.  Everyone who is a citizen of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, a British Dependent Territory, the Republic of Ireland or a European Union Country who is resident in the Borough and is over 18 years of age during the currency of the Register has the right to be registered and to vote. Citizens of European Union countries may only vote in local and European elections. Full list of eligible countries.

Many organizations use the electoral register to confirm that a person lives where they say they do.  If you don't register it becomes harder to obtain personal services such as credit, bank accounts and student grants.

More than that, it will cost you (and everyone else in the District) in additional Council Tax contributions, as the Government uses the electoral register to assess the population of Harrogate. It then uses that figure when deciding how much money it grants to Harrogate to pay for key services.

Two Versions of the Register

Full Register - this lists everyone who has registered and is available to be viewed but is only passed on to companies entitled to under the law for the prevention and detection of crime and checking your identity when you apply for credit

Edited Register -  This can be sold to anyone that requests a copy. At present approximatley 40% of the Harrogate electorate opt not to be on the edited register.
