How To Claim Council Tax Benefit
Claimants in receipt of Income Support / Income-Based
Jobseeker's Allowance / Pension Credits
At the same time that you claim the above benefits,
you will be asked if you would like to claim Housing / Council Tax
Benefit. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) office will
usually collate most of the information needed and will send you a
claim form to sign and return to us.
Other Claimants
If you are employed or self-employed, pensioner etc. and not
in receipt of the above benefits then you can obtain an
application from the council. As benefit cannot, normally, be
backdated, this should be returned to the council as quickly as
possible with all the evidence of income, rent etc. that is
requested.
If you are unable to visit one of our offices because of
illness or disability and need help to complete your benefit
claim form we can provide a home visit to help you.
Making A New Claim
The form to claim council tax and/or council
tax benefit asks a lot of questions, which are necessary to make
sure you receive all the benefit that you are entitled to and to
ensure we make the correct decision on your claim.
You will be asked to provide evidence in support of your
claim, details of this can be found in the leaflet
'Making a new claim'.
