Council Tax

Introduction to Council Tax

As at 12/03/07 there were 68,475 domestic dwellings in the Harrogate District from which the Revenues and Benefits Service collects some £97m.

Council Tax is one of the ways in which the council raises money to pay for the services it provides. It is a property tax with a personal element - that is, it takes into account the value of a property and the number of people aged 18 or over who live there.

The council sets the level of it's portion of the Council Tax after taking account of the costs of providing its services and income from other sources such as Government Grants. Harrogate Borough Council is responsible for collecting all of the Council Tax Bill. But 85% is collected on behalf of the North Yorkshire County Council, the North Yorkshire Police Authority, and the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority who are responsible for setting their own budget taxes. The actual amount payable is based on the Band into which your property has been placed.

The information held by the Council in respect of Council Tax liabilities, may be used within the Council and by other Government organisations, for the purposes of preventing and detecting fraud.
