Who Can Claim Housing Benefit
To be entitled to make a claim for housing
benefit you have to satisfy four basic conditions:
- You must be resident in the property
- You must occupy the dwelling as your
home
- You must be required to pay rent for the
dwelling
- You must either be entitled to Income
Support, Jobseeker's Allowance, Income Related Employment
Support Allowance, Pensions Credits or have a low
income
People who often don't claim this help when
they could be entitled are:
- Aged 60 or over
- Carers
- Larger families
- Disabled or ill
- Families with a disabled child
- Working and on a low wage or in part-time
work
Exceptions
Full-time students, unless they are disabled or have dependent
children, do not qualify.
You cannot claim housing benefit if you live in the same
household as, and pay rent to, a close relative.
Those with savings, capital or investments with a value in excess
of £16,000 will not qualify for housing benefit.
