Routes in progress

  • Harrogate Road Cycle Track in Knaresborough
The first and second phases of the route alongside the A59 are complete.  Land negotiations are still delaying the completion of the final stage to link the path to High Bridge.  The route will then become much easier to use.
  • St Georges - This path will link St Georges Road to Leadhall Drive

Consultation

There is extensive consultation on the proposed routes which will affect the network as proposals are adjusted and refined. Often consultation is guided by statutory procedures such as the Planning Act, The Road Traffic Regulation Act, the Cycletracks Act or the Highways Act. However, consultation is always in excess of the statutory requirements and includes letters to nearby residents, site notices, press releases and radio interviews. Additionally, negotiations are being held with the NYCC Education Authority, Railtrack, Northern Spirit, Department of Leisure and Amenity Services, the District Hospital, housing developers and various other bodies whose land is crossed by the proposed routes.

Motorcycle Barriers

Motorcycles are not allowed in parks or on traffic cycle routes.  It is an offence to drive a motorvehicle away from the highway under Section 34 of the 1984 Road Traffic Act.  In addition to signing, some routes have barriers to motorcycles.  The barriers are designed to be too narrow for motorcycles, but wide enough for cycles.  Wheelchairs and prams should not be obstructed.

Leisure Cycling

Many of the routes in "Breakfree Country Walks" by Open Country are also suitagble for gentle leisure cycling.

The "Breakfree Country Walks" pack can be obtained from Tourist Information Centres for £2.

Beryl Burton Cycle Way

2.8km in length.  Allows cyclists to travel between Harrogate and Knaresborough without using the A59.  Beryl Burton OBE was World Champion 7 times.  Sadly Beryl died in 1996 at the early age of 58.  This cycleway is dedicated to her memory.
