The Action for the Environment Group is spearheading the

The Action for the Environment Group supported Harrogate Car
Free Day on 24th September 2008. The Group held a public
meeting in September to hear from a range of speakers about the

Environmental Issues

In
the Harrogate District, environmental issues are tackled by the
council, with the help of an environmental forum called the
Harrogate District
Action for the Environment
Group.
You can sign up now to the group's FREE email bulletin, which
will bring you the latest environmental news, direct to your
in-box, so you can keep up to date on environmental issues and
events in the Harrogate District.
Simply complete the registration form below to sign up.
The email bulletins provide information about forthcoming
environmental events, council consultations and news about
environmental activities the Action for the Environment Group and
the council are running. You will get the bulletin about four times
a year.
Please note that your details will be stored in an electronic
database. They will only be used to provide the environmental
issues email bulletin, and they will not be passed on to any third
party or used for any other purpose.

about the Action for the Environment Group

The Action
for the Environment Group is comprised of representatives from
local environmental groups, businesses, and community and statutory
organisations and individuals with an interest in environmental
issues, allowing a wide range of environmental, social and economic
interests of the community to be considered.
The Group was established as part of the Agenda 21 process, to
investigate the issues that needed to be covered in the district's
Local Agenda 21 Plan, called "Action for the Environment"
The Group's aim is to stimulate new projects and promote
awareness of environmental issues. The Group helps the council in
developing its environmental policy. It is also one of the key
forums of the Local Strategic Partnership and contributes to the
development of the Harrogate District Community Plan.

Recent projects and activities include:
- Hosting the district's Plastic Bag Summit to discuss the use of
plastic carrier bags with major supermarkets
- Sponsoring the successful funding bid to the Harrogate District
Strategic Partnership for the schools
environmental project
- Supporting the Harrogate District Green Business Club
- Being a partner organisation for the Harrogate Car
Share scheme
- Supporting the BAFTERS environmental awards and
helping to judge the entries
- Responding to national and local consultations on the UK
Sustainable Development Strategy, the Harrogate District Waste
Action Plan, and various planning consultations.
The group regularly meets to discuss current projects and
future interests and also holds public meetings for a wider
audience. Recent guest speakers have given talks on topics such as
wildlife gardening, Fair Trade, GM crops and wind farms.
