Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is a solution to the problem of energy generation from fossil fuels: The generation of power from renewable sources does not produce the greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change, it is not running out, and its costs are falling not rising. No one can own the sun or the wind so no one can charge you for using it.

Renewable energy can be installed in your home and some businesses to save you money and help relieve the impacts on North Yorkshire and beyond.

Harrogate Borough Council can assist you in finding grants for renewable energy technologies.

Purchasing renewable energy technology allows you to use natural unlimited energy resources for free without releasing harmful gases to the environment; producing your own energy even lets you sell your energy to the energy companies.

Ground Source Heat Pump scheme

In 2005, we installed Ground Source Heat Pumps in eight council-owned bungalows as a trial project.

As a result of the trial, we are now installing Heat Pumps in many more council homes.

Climate Change

The climate is changing now, and more change is in the pipeline.

A lot of this change is happening because of the greenhouse gases that we are adding to the atmosphere. These gases are trapping more heat, making the overall temperature of the world increase. This is changing our climate, and we will see more extreme weather and other effects as a result.

Tackling climate change and adapting to its effects may be difficult, but there are also opportunities for better energy efficiency and green technology.

It will take time and coordinated international action to stabilise and reverse these changes. But that does not mean we have to wait before taking action in the Harrogate District.

Our plan

Harrogate Council has adopted a Climate Change Strategy in which ultimately aims to cut the District's carbon dioxide emissions by 40 per cent by 2020.

We are also aiming to make a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions from its own operations by 2020 and an 80% reduction by 2050.

There are four main areas in the strategy:
  • Energy Use - for example, improving energy efficiency in homes, businesses and in the council's operations; promoting and using renewable and other low carbon energy sources.
  • Transport - for example, improving vehicle efficiency in the council's fleet; promoting alternatives to private cars.
  • Purchasing - for example, using the council's purchasing power to adopt sustainable procurement principles within the council.
  • Raising awareness and changing attitudes - for example, working with schools and community groups with the Community Carbon Reduction project ; providing information to householders in both public and private sector housing; providing assistance for local businesses to cut carbon and raising awareness in the workplace.
