Supplementary Planning Guidance & Supplementary Planning Documents

Icon: Supplementary Design Guidance To maintain the high standard of environment the Council's Heritage and Design Team has produced design guidance which has been approved as Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) to the Harrogate District Local Plan and which should be read in conjunction with it.

In addition, Development Control Guidance has been produced by the Planning Policy Team covering: Affordable Housing, Parking requirements, Residential conversion, the control of demolition in Conservation Areas, developer contributions to education facilities and the protection of community facilities. These documents are available from the Development Control Guidance page.  The Planning Policy Team has also produced Supplementary Planning Documents (SPD) to the Harrogate District Local Development Framework (LDF)(the replacement to the Local Plan).

House Extensions & Garages Design Guide SPD (2005)

House Extensions & Garages Design Guide (page link).  This document (supercedes the 'House Extensions Design Guide' first published in 1980) has guidance for anyone intending to extend their house or build a garage, or other outbuilding, in their garden.  It was adopted in September 2005 as a Supplementary Planning Document to the LDF. 
 

Station Parade, Harrogate: Development Brief SPG (2005)

(approved by the Area 3 Development control Committee on 10 May 2005) is Supplementary Planning Guidance.

Landscape Character Assessment SPG (published 2004)

This comprehensive assessment, approved as Supplementary Planning Guidance in Feb 2004, partitions the rural parts of the District into 106 areas of landscape type.  View the Assessment on an area by area basis.  For more details contact the Heritage & Design Team's Landscape Architect on (01423) 556592.

Landscape Design Guide SPG (published 2002)

This guidance is intended to clarify landscape requirements for granting planning permission, to illustrate and encourage good practice, encourage an integrated approach to landscape conservation and development, and to help planners and developers implement planning policy.  It should be seen as a helpful starting point rather than a substitute for original thought.

Shopfronts Design Guide SPG (published 1999*)

High quality traditional shopfronts survive in the main towns of Harrogate District.  The Council's policy is to retain these and to ensure a high standard of design in new shopfronts.  This guidance amplifies Local Plan policies and does not seek to lay down over-rigid rules or to stifle genuine innovation.  (Note: we are unable to offer any shopfront grants.)
