The street cleansing service employs 22 street cleaners. 17 patrol on foot with 'Orderly Barrows', picking up litter and sweeping up accumulations of detritus. They operate from local sub-depots around the District.
4 street cleaning van drivers cover Pateley Bridge and Boroughbridge, and perform litter picking at lay-bys and along principal and rural roads, and service dog waste bins and litter bins. They also help remove flytipping within Harrogate and Knaresborough.
Finally, we have a Mechanical footpath sweeper (1 staff) operating in the southern side of Harrogate, based around the Leeds Road shopping area and covering Burn Bridge and Pannal.
This service employs another 9 frontline staff that operates the 4 mechanical carriageway sweepers and 2 gully tanker vehicles.
The gulley tankers operate solely in the Harrogate and Knaresborough highway agency area cleansing around 15,000 gullies, twice per year. However the tanker vehicles also deliver a chargeable septic tank emptying service.
The carriageway sweepers are all garaged in Harrogate but are tasked throughout Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon and rural villages. The frequency of sweeping carriageways varies between daily in town/city centre to 'as required' on un-kerbed rural roads.
Note that road sweepers cannot clean up to edge on roads without a kerb, as the brushes would damage the grass verge, throwing earth onto the road and destroying vegetation.
