Rats and Mice Pest Treatment

It is often common for evidence of Rats and Mice (eg, sounds, droppings, nests) to be confused one with the other. The cost of treating Rats and Mice is the same. The Pest Control Officer will clarify which pest you have during treatment. You can ask for a separate pest identification (see below).

If you use a compost bin in your garden, the attached leaflet provides some useful information on how to avoid attracting rats.

Treatments

Treatments for either rodent is usually spread over a period of one month to six weeks.  During this time the Pest Control Officer will make enough visits to complete the treatment. Usually they will need access to the property so a key holder will need to be present.

The type of treatment used depends on risk assessment conducted by Pest Control Officer, and can be affected by the presence of either:

  • Children
  • Pets
Treatment Hours
Treatments are normally carried out during weekday office hours. However, during the peak summer season, longer hours and weekend working is often undertaken.
Appointments

When making an appointment to visit, the Pest Control Officer will also advise on things that may encourage rodents, for example, feeding garden birds.

Pest Identification
If you are unsure of the exact nature of an pest, request a Pest Control Officer to phone, who may be able to identify the pest over the phone, or arrange for a visual identification. Advice over the phone is free, but there is a call out charge of £17.63 if the Pest Control Offer has to make a visit.
Charge

The current charge for a complete treatment is £59.93 incl VAT for domestic properties (free if on income support or registered disabled). Phone 0845 300 6091 to arrange a pest control visit or to set up a new pest control contract.

Retreatments
Sometimes treatments need reapplication to fully eradicate a pest. Sometimes, new pests take over the space once occupied by an eradicated pest. Pest Control Officers will decide whether the return of a pest is the same pest requiring a retreatment (which is free), or a new pest infestation requiring a new treatment (which will require payment).
