Self Administrated Allotments

Harrogate Borough Council actively encourage their allotment sites to become part of the Self Administration Scheme.

The plot-holders form an Association, which includes a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and Trustees. These are volunteers who carry out the day to day running of the site themselves, with the constant support from the Council's Assistant Community Liaison Officer.

Running the site in this way has many benefits including:

  • Having more say in how the site is run
  • In most cases, cheaper rents
  • A tremendous community spirit
  • Social activities
  • The ability to apply for grants and funding

Best Kept Allotment Site

Each year, the self administrated sites are judged for the title 'Best Kept Allotment Site', awarded by Harrogate in Bloom, and 'Highly Commended Allotment Site' awarded by Harrogate Borough Council. These awards are then handed out at the Annual Allotment Show.
