The latest estimated population of the Harrogate
district is 157,800, (mid year estimate, 2006) an increase
of 4.3% since the 2001 estimate of 151,339.

continued into the early 21st century. The chart below
compares the Harrogate district with other local authority
areas in Yorkshire and shows it to have the lowest
percentage of working age population (61%).
Population location and
composition
The DEFRA Rural definition identifies 32.5% of
people in the Harrogate district live in rural
areas; this is compared to a 20% average across Yorkshire
and the Humber.
The 2001 Census indicates:
- Lone parent households with dependent children
comprise 5% of all households in the Harrogate
district (2,933 households)
- 98.4% of the district's population is white (148,981). The
most prevalent minority ethnic group was Chinese at 0.3% (413
persons).
- There are 23,591 people (or 16% of all residents) who
rated themselves as having some limiting long-term illness that
limited the type of work they could do. This figure is similar to
that seen for the County of North Yorkshire (17%).
- A total of 14,524 people provided unpaid care for others in the
district (9.6% of residents). This is slightly less than the figure
for the County of North Yorkshire as a whole (9.9%).
