Whilst the unemployment rate in the Harrogate District continues to
remain low, at 1.1% and less than half the national average,
there has been a noticeable increase in the total number of
claimants (126 people) from the previous month.
During July the number of unemployment benefit claimants increased nationally and across all local authority areas in North Yorkshire, excepting Selby (a 0.1% decrease). This is in contrast to the previous three months (April - June 2008, Quarter 1 of 2008/09) during which time unemployment rates remained unchanged.
Given the recent increase in interest rates, and the current economic downturn, these changes to the unemployment rate are not unexpected. However, the district and county unemployment rate remains unchanged from a year ago, July 2007, and equal to or less than two years ago, July 2006.
