Club Development

Clubmark Accreditation is important for any sports club wishing to ensure that when searching for a new club for themselves or their children, prospective members know that they have achieved a certain standard of quality.

It also helps a club to fulfil certain criteria that all clubs should be striving to achieve in the 21st century: a coaches code of conduct; a child protection policy; and task descriptions for coaches and volunteers.

It ensures that all those involved with the club, as a player, parent, volunteer or coach are protected and supported by the club.

Harrogate Borough Council's Sports Development Team supports clubs through the Clubmark procedure, or a particular sport's own accreditation scheme through its National Governing Body (NGB), such as the FA's Charter Standard.

What is Clubmark?

Clubmark is a safe, effective and child-friendly club accreditation. For sports to develop, the quality of club activity is essential. Clubmark is used by the NGBs of sport as part of their club accreditation programme. It is employed primarily for clubs with junior sections to ensure an environment and culture appropriate for young people. In addition, it is nationally recognised as the mark of a quality club.

Harrogate Borough Council understands the value of quality clubs, and is working with the NGBs to promote and help clubs to reach this benchmark.

How will it benefit your club?

By reaching this national standard your sports club will benefit in a number of ways, through:

  • Increased membership
  • Support from Sports Development professionals
  • Development for the future
  • Development of coaches, leading to increased performance and success, and building the capacity of your club
  • Development of volunteers
  • An increase in club profile
  • Its presence on local and national databases

Club Accreditation greatly assists the development of sport and contributes to the increase in levels of participation in young people and adults.

Some NGBs use their own accreditation schemes which are very similar to Clubmark, for example Football has the Charter Standard scheme. For details of other accreditation programmes, visit your NGB's website. If you are unsure who this is, please contact the Sports Development Team and we will advise you.
