St James Square
St James Square and its immediate environs is a key gateway
and public space in Boroughbridge and as a consequence of its poor
condition, it was identified within the initial RMT Boroughbridge
Business Plan as a key regeneration project.
There is a recognised need to enhance the visual appearance of
the Square; improve ease of access for all; balance the needs of
pedestrians and motorists; increase public safety; encourage
greater use of the Square (both for ad hoc use by individuals and
possibly for organised events such as farmers markets); and enhance
the setting of the listed buildings around the Square.
Improvements at St James Square are being supported through
the
'Improving the Offer' package of projects
(as supported by Yorkshire Forward) - this will see the
long-awaited re cobbling of the Square.
The Square is in a number of private ownerships and so there
has been limited opportunity for comprehensive
improvement. Discussions between the owners and other
interested parties, including Yore Vision and Boroughbridge Town
Council, have been taking place for some time. Formal public access
and management arrangements agreed with the owners and funding
through this package will enable the various interested parties to
work together to allow the re-cobbling of St James Square to
finally happen.
The improvement works will enable to Square to play a key part
in the delivery of the cultural and economic renaissance of
Boroughbridge.
The RMT Rural Target Fund in 2006/07
supported the provision and installation of new benches,
planters and decorative lighting at the square - these initial
small scale works were undertaken in view of the longer-term works
and so all items can be reinstated following the re-cobbling to
present a completely rejuvenated focal point for the town.
