The site forms part of the Nidd Gorge, of which small pockets of woodland help to naturally link Harrogate to Knaresborough via Bilton.

The site drops steeply from east to west, with an overall fall of approximately 20 metres. The wood, which contains Oak Beck, is characteristically wet at its lowest points during many of the winter months.
