Trees

For the most part, the site is comprised of mixed native deciduous species, which are predominantly located around the eastern and southern boundaries of the park.

Veteran Trees
The site contains a number of Veteran Trees. These important and majestic trees are extremely important in terms of:

  • Providing habitat for large numbers of bird species
  • Providing habitat for large numbers of insect species
  • Helping to 'lock-up' (sequester) large amounts of carbon dioxide and release this over a long period
  • Providing important breeding grounds for common woodland fungi
  • Helping to maintain historic landscapes
  • Providing focal points and points of interest within the landscape

However, due to the nature, age and condition of these trees, branch or whole tree failure cannot be predicted. As such, it has been necessary to install permanent 'Exclusion Zones' around the base of each veteran tree. The Exclusion Zone should provide an area into which any branch or tree should safely fall, thus protecting the general public.

The Exclusion Zone will also allow for the trees themselves to grow old naturally and gracefully without any intervention from man.
