17 June 2008 - Harrogate Borough
Council is to hold a second public consultation on proposals for
Jacob Smith Park in Scriven, near Knaresborough.
The meeting will take place on Saturday, 5 July between 9.30am and
2.30 pm in Park Grove Methodist Church.
Over 39 acres of private walled parkland were transferred to
the council under the will of Miss Winifred Jacob Smith for the
pleasure of residents and visitors.
The council has to work within the terms of the bequest but it
was agreed that, when the land was made public, local residents
would be consulted on its future look.
The results of the first public meeting held in January this
year showed that most people think the park needs more access
points; that it should continue to look as natural as possible but
that suitable surfacing should be provided for wheelchairs and
pushchairs; that motorised vehicles should not be allowed and that
sports pitches of any kind should not be included in the park
land.
The full results of the first consultation will be available
at this second public meeting which will focus on the location of
the entranceways, the style of gates, car parking and park
signage. Discussions will also take place on the
question of footpath surfaces and layouts.
Questionnaires will be available on the day as well as on the
council's website. Those attending on Saturday 5
July will have the opportunity to walk around the site with a
member of the Parks Team.
Once the results of the second consultation are known, a final
report will be drafted and a work plan
established. It is also proposed that a Friends
of Jacob Smith Park also be created. ENDS
