6 August 2008 - A team building event and partnership working
has led to the Millennium Green in Bilton receiving a much-needed
revamp.
The Green, created in 2000, had been allowed to grow a little
wild and when Proctor & Gamble decided to have a team-building
day, it was decided that Bilton's Millennium Green would be a good
place to focus their energies.
Keith Wilkinson Secretary of the Bilton Conservation Group led
the clean up event, supported by members of the Conservation Group
plus volunteers from Open Country.
The Council for Voluntary Services and Harrogate and District
Community Safety Partnership (HDCSP) co-ordinated the day and other
businesses in the town pulled together to see the revamp
through.
Keith Wilkinson said: "I'm delighted to see Millennium Green
restored as a community facility for residents to enjoy once
more. The Youth Offending Team has signed up to
continue maintaining the site and the trustees are arranging for
the grass to be cut regularly so it won't be in danger of falling
into disrepair again. This is partnership
working at its best."
Project officer, Andrea Hutton said the HDCSP had been pleased
to help out. "The Green was in desperate need of
some immediate action and we have to make sure that plans are in
place for it never to get into such a state
again. We have had a lot of help, particularly
from the Bilton Conservation Group and Proctor & Gamble and
with donations from Homebase, Harrogate Timber and Harrogate
Borough Council the Green has been restored to its original
glory.
"Thanks must also go to Connaught and Baldwin who offered
their services free of charge and repaired manhole covers on the
Green. All in all it has been an excellent example of local
communities working together." ENDS
NOTE TO EDITORS : When it
began in 1996, the aim of the Millennium Greens' initiative was to
provide new areas of public open space close to people's homes that
could be enjoyed permanently by the local community.
They were to be breathing spaces - places for relaxation, play
and enjoyment of nature and pleasant
surroundings. They could be small or large, and
in urban or rural locations. At the end of
December 2001, 245 Millennium Greens had been created. They were
all developed by the local people who had drawn up their plans,
purchased the land, and carried out the work necessary to provide a
local green space.
