Biodiversity in Harrogate District
Public Consultation on the draft Harrogate District BAP -
Closed on 26 September 2008
Harrogate District BAP is a pooling of
information by groups and individuals interested in the District's
wildlife habitats, flora and fauna. This
Partnership, led by Harrogate Borough Council and North Yorkshire
County Council with support from Natural England, has drawn up an
Action Programme to conserve and enhance the District's
wildlife, The draft BAP document can be
downloaded from the pdf links below (or can be read in hard copy at
the reference section of the District's libraries)
The document comprises an Introduction, 15
Habitat Action Plans (HAPs), 7 Species Action Plans (SAPs) and an
Action Programme and outlines the national and local policy
framework that protects it. There's also an
overview of the District's wildlife. The 15 HAPS are
considered the District's most important wildlife habitats and they
include over 100 local priority species.
Usually, action to protect and enhance the habitat will also
benefit its priority species, but the 7 SAPs cover species needing
specific actions, or those which when conserved, will
benefit other wildlife. The Action Programme
includes 'targets' to conserve and enhance biodiversity and
'actions' needed to achieve them. The BAP is a
'snapshot in time' but will be a useful reference tool and a basis
for ongoing monitoring of the District's wildlife - and for future
projects to secure and enhance biodiversity.
All comments received will be carefully
considered and may lead to amendments of the BAP. It is hoped
that the final version will be presented for Cabinet approval
towards the end of 2008.
