13 August 2008: ON Sunday, 24 August
2008 London will officially become the venue of the 'next' world
Olympics. The handing over of the Olympic flag represents a
cultural event of significant national importance last celebrated
when London hosted the Olympics in 1948.
To celebrate this important occasion and to show its support
for the Games, Harrogate Borough Council is going to charge just
48p for all general swimming sessions, badminton, squash and
aerobic activities at all its facilities* for one day only on
Sunday, 24 August.
The council will also be inviting one of the district's
budding Olympians to raise the Olympic Flag on the Council Offices
on Tuesday, 26 August details will follow.
Councillor Pat Jones, Cabinet Member for Cultural Services,
who has approved the reduced prices said: "We have all been
glued to the television throughout the amazing show being staged in
Beijing. We have some excellent sporting and leisure
facilities in our district and this is one way we feel we can open
them up to those who have now been inspired to take up a new
sport. But, of course, the reduced prices are also available
to our regular users.
"There is a lot of planning to be done for 2012 Games but we
are right behind the organising committee and, like all local
authorities, we are happy to respond to their rallying call."

NOTE TO EDITORS: *The offer does not
