Heritage Open Days 10-14 September 2008
Heritage Open Days is a chance to discover hidden treasures
and enjoy a wide range of tours and events which bring to life the
history and culture of the Harrogate district.
This national event is organised by the Civic Trust and
English Heritage as well as hundreds of local organisations.
This year Harrogate Borough Council and Harrogate Civic
Society have worked together to offer the following open days and
tours in the Harrogate and Knaresborough area.
This year you can visit:
The
TURKISH BATHS (Parliament Street,
Harrogate) on a booked tour at 10am and 11am on Wednesday 10th
September.
Gain a glimpse of what a visit entailed back in the late 1800s,
and view the recent restoration work which will reveal the Baths'

- The HARROGATE CLUB (Victoria Avenue, Harrogate) on
Thursday 11th September at 10.30am for a guided tour by Malcolm
Neesam.
Visit this fine Victorian building where the Gentlemen's Club was
founded in 1875. One of the early members was Sir Titus Salt.
Refreshments will be available.
- The ROYAL HALL (Ripon
Road,
Harrogate) on Thursday 11th September between 11am and 4pm.
Restored to its original magnificence, see the amazing restoration
work of this stunning Edwardian theatre, designed by Frank
Matcham.
- GROVE HOUSE (Skipton Road, Harrogate) on Thursday
11th until Sunday 14th September, each day from 10.30am until
4pm. Visit this historic Grade II listed building set in 7
acres of gardens. The museum displays artefacts all about the Order
of the Buffaloes dating from the mid-19th century onwards.
- STONEFALL CEMETERY (Wetherby Road, Harrogate) on Thursday
11th and Friday 12th September from 9am until 4pm.
Visit this 30 acre site featuring the crematorium, Hebrew cemetery
and adjoining war grave commission area where 1,000 Canadian airmen
are buried.
CHRIST CHURCH (Church Square,
Harrogate) on Thursday 11th until Saturday 13th September from 9am
until 4pm and Sunday 14th September from 2pm until 4pm.
Located on the Stray with its own walled churchyard, this is the
town's oldest church (1831). Notable interior galleries and crypt
and reredos by Sir Ninian Cooper; transept and chancel added
1862.
- The COUNCIL CHAMBERS (Crescent Gardens, Harrogate) on
Thursday 11th September between 10am and 1pm and Friday 12th
September between 2pm and 4pm.
This is where all those important decisions within the district are
made. Discover the Chamber's history.
- ST PETER'S CHURCH (Cambridge Street, Harrogate) on
Thursday 11th until Saturday 13th September from 8am until 5pm and
Sunday 14th September from 12pm until 6pm.
The main body of this church dates from 1870 with its prominent
bell tower added in 1926. Notable painted glass and stone roundels
of faces.
- ROYAL PUMP ROOM
MUSEUM
(Crown Place, Harrogate) on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th September
from 10am until 5pm. Book a tour to visit the sulphur well on
Friday 12th only at 10.30am, 11.30am and 2.30pm. Book on 01423

Harrogate's fascinating spa history.
Step back in time in our Ancient Egyptian exhibitions area where
you can see treasures such as a mummy mask, amulets and
shabtis.
- HARROGATE SYNAGOGUE (St Mary's Walk, Harrogate) on Friday
12th September between 10.30am and 2pm.
Harrogate's Hebrew congregation was formed in 1918 and has
worshipped here ever since. A rare chance to see inside.
KNARESBOROUGH
CASTLE AND COURTHOUSE MUSEUM (Castle Yard, Knaresborough) on
Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September from 10.30am until
5pm.
Take this chance to explore the King's Tower, dark dungeon and
secret underground tunnel, the Tudor Courtroom and discover
Knaresborough's history FREE OF CHARGE.
- ST WILFRID'S CHURCH (Duchy Road, Harrogate) on Thursday
11th and Friday 12th September from 8am until 4pm and Saturday 13th
and Sunday 14th September from 8am until 6pm.
Built in the early 20th century and considered to be the
best work of architect Temple Moore. See stained glass and a figure
brass in the chancel floor depicting the first priest.
- The WESLEY CHAPEL (Oxford Street, Harrogate) on Friday
12th and Saturday 13th September from 9.30am until 12.30pm.
Grade II listed building dating from 1862. Built by Lockwood and
Mawson in the traditional meeting house style with unusual curved
gallery and superb woodwork. Refreshments available at nominal
charge.
