Harrogate Rotary Club and schoolchildren plant 23,000 daffodils on Wetherby Road
The Rotary Club of Harrogate is planting 23,000 daffodil bulbs
on the Wetherby Road approach to Harrogate, with the agreement of
Harrogate Borough Council. These bulbs are of three different
varieties, thereby providing flowers from late February to early
April.
The bulbs will be planted on 28th and 29th
September on the wide verges of Wetherby Road between the Harrogate
sign and the Wetherby Road/Forest Lane cross-roads. On Sunday 28
September, young soldiers from the Army Foundation College will
prepare the ground, digging the necessary holes. Then on Monday 29
September, schoolchildren from a number of primary schools will
plant the bulbs. The schools involved are:
Grove Road Community Primary School
Hookstone Chase Community Primary School
Oatlands Community Junior School
Starbeck Community Primary School
Woodlands Community Junior School
During the planting on Monday, the Mayor of Harrogate
Councillor John Fox will visit the site at 10.00am.
As part of a separate Rotary initiative, each of the
schoolchildren involved will subsequently be presented with a copy
of the Usborne Illustrated Dictionary.
The area of planting will be 'coned off' to keep everyone
involved on the verge and away from the road. Nevertheless,
motorists are asked to be particularly vigilant on this stretch of
road during these two days.
