How do I make a claim?
There are a number of different ways to make a claim:
If you are claiming Income Support, Income based Job Seekers Allowance or Pension Credits, you will be asked if you would like to claim Housing / Council Tax Benefit as well. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) office will collate most of the information needed and will send this to the Council automatically.
If you are not in receipt of the above benefits, you should obtain an application form from the Council direct. As benefit cannot, normally, be backdated, this should be returned to the Council as quickly as possible with all the evidence of income, capital, rent etc. that is requested.
If you are unable to visit one of our offices because of illness or disability and need help to complete your benefit claim form, our Welfare and Support Officer can provide a home visit to help you.
The form to claim Housing Benefit asks a lot of questions. These are necessary to make sure that you receive all the benefit that you are entitled to and to ensure we make the correct decision on your claim. If you pay Council Tax as well as rent and you wish to claim both Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit, the one claim form will cover both benefits.
