Emergency planning

Our role in a major incident is to support the Emergency Services, and maintain essential Council services and help the community return to normal as soon as possible.

The Council's response to a major incident may include one or all of the following actions:-

  • Establishing an Emergency Control Centre to coordinate the work of all the responding authorities.
  • Assisting with the cleaning up of the affected area and providing residents with advice and information on how best to achieve this.
  • Keeping the public informed of the latest situation.
  • Providing advice on the temporary re-housing of displaced residents.
  • Setting up Rest Centres to provide temporary shelter for those residents who have been evacuated from the vicinity of a major incident.
  • Responding to requests for assistance from the Emergency Services during an emergency situation.
  • Following a major incident taking the lead role in helping the community to recover and to return to a normal life as soon as possible.
