Help available because of the coronavirus
If your income has changed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, and you are concerned about paying your rent or council tax, we can help.
- you can apply to have your council tax reduced
- if you are of pension age and need help to pay your rent, you can apply for housing benefit
- if you receive housing benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit and you are struggling to pay the remainder of your rent, we may be able to give you a temporary, extra rent top up from our discretionary housing payment fund
- if you are of working age and need help with your rent or day to day living costs, you can claim Universal Credit and/or Job Seekers Allowance direct from the Department of Work and Pensions
If you're having difficulties paying your council tax, please contact us straight away. We can discuss the options available, such as alternative payment arrangements, and will do our best to help
If you already receive council tax support or housing benefit, please let us know about any income changes you have so we can make sure we are paying you your correct entitlement.

View your council tax online
If you have a council tax account you can now view your account online. You will be able to:
- view your account statement and instalments
- check your balance and make payments
- contact us and tell us of a change
Your account details are held securely, so to access them you will need to register or sign in to your My Harrogate customer account. Once you are signed in, go to the My accounts tab to add access to your council tax account. You will need your account reference number shown on your bill.
Council tax and business rates scams
Losing money to fraudsters is a real - and increasing - problem.
We are aware some criminals pretend to be 'enforcement officers' and deliberately target council tax or business rate payers to steal money. If someone knocks on your door and claims to be an enforcement officer, do not let them in. Instead, insist on seeing their identity card and ask them to prove who they claim to be. None of our staff will ever be offended if you ask to see ID.
If you are ever in doubt someone isn't a member of our staff, please call us immediately on 01423 500600. We'll be happy to confirm whether they are genuine.
If someone rings your home or business, you should be equally cautious. Never reveal any sensitive information in a phone call and be very suspicious of people who ask for passwords, PINs or account details. Do not give away any personal information.
Fraudsters also use email and text messages to try and scam you out of your hard-earned cash. Do not click on links in messages. Criminals are known to set up fake websites that look like real banks to trick people into handing over account numbers and PINs.
Instead, call your bank using the number on your debit card to double-check the message is genuine.
