Fly tipping

Fly tipping is the illegal deposit of waste on land.

Common items include

  • white goods
  • mattresses
  • construction waste
  • household waste
  • garden waste

Fly tipping also includes

  • putting that extra bin bag next to your bin
  • putting your old washing machine, scrap metal or any unwanted item out on the highway

Fly tipping is a criminal offence. We have the power to seize vehicles, issue a fixed penalty notice of £400 or to prosecute. This could result in an unlimited fine and/or up to five years in prison.

If you have excess waste that needs removing you must ensure whoever you employ has an upper tier waste carriers licence issued by the Environment Agency (EA). You can check this by contacting the EA on 03708 506 506 or visiting environment.data.gov.uk/public-register/view/search-waste-carriers-brokers. If they don't have a licence do not employ them. If you do and your waste is found fly tipped you are at risk of receiving a fixed penalty notice of £250.

We are not responsible for clearing waste from private land, the landowner is.
