Preventing fly tipping

Don't put waste out for collection that cannot be contained within the waste containers provided by ourselves. No side waste. It will be classed as fly tipped waste.

Don't place bulky unwanted items on the highway. It will be classed as fly tipped waste.

Traditionally many people used to leave scrap metal out for the 'scrap man'. You should never leave any waste like this in the street for someone to remove. Not only will it be classed as fly tipped waste but the person collecting it may not be a registered waste carrier and/or licensed scrap metal collector, and could take the bits they need and dump the rest.

If you have items that are in reasonable condition, you could consider donating them to a charity for re-use.

Certain items can be collected via the bulky waste collection, for example.

  • bed bases/mattresses
  • furniture
  • white goods
  • electrical goods
  • carpet

If you have any unwanted electrical items and are looking to replace them with a similar item, under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013 consumers should be offered a take-back system where an electrical item can be disposed of free of charge. Please ask the retailer about this.

Don't unwittingly use a rogue trader to remove your waste. Whether you find someone through social media, an advert or even someone approaching you directly you need to check they are a registered waste carrier and they have a waste carrier permit (upper tier). It is illegal for them to take your waste if they are not and they could be a rogue trader. You can check if they are a registered waste carrier online or by calling 03708 506 506.

Take the items and any excess waste that won't fit into your appropriate waste receptacle to the household waste and recycling centres on Wetherby Road, Penny Pot Lane Harrogate or Dallamires Crescent Ripon.
