The latest exhibitions at Mercer Gallery in Harrogate explore the interplay between painting and photography. Works on show range from rarely-exhibited 19th Century portraits by the great Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, to major works by contemporary Yorkshire photographers.
Selected from Harrogate's Fine Art Collection, a rich variety of artworks reveals how the invention of photography in the 1830s shook painting to its foundations and encouraged one artist to declare: “From today, painting is dead”. Highlights include a charming portrait by the renowned Victorian artist G F Watts, and ‘Silver Moonlight’ by the Leeds born painter John Atkinson Grimshaw.
Don't forget the Mercer Art Gallery shop for unique books, cards, jewellery and contemporary art at affordable prices.
