You must send a food business registration form to us at least 28 days before starting your new food business. Registration is free and can't be refused.
We advise you to read the food business guidance.
This explains who needs to register, who doesn't need to apply and offers other general information. Your business will then be inspected by a food safety officer and if your business is within the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, given a food hygiene rating.
If your business involves storing, handling, preparing, or sale of food products of animal origin, such as meat, dairy, fish, eggs, which are not for retail sale you may need approval. Further guidance is available at the Food Standards Agency website.
