There is no fixed entry route to working in local government. The skills and experience you need vary depending on the duties and level of responsibility of the job. Some roles may ask for a degree or qualifications specific to the job such as town planning officer, accountant or surveyor. Each individual job advert will have more information about the qualifications and experience you need for that particular post.
Depending on the job our starting salaries can be between £12,000 and £15,000 a year. More experienced managers can earn £28,000 or more a year. Depending on the service area you work in, experienced senior officers can earn £37,000 a year or more. These figures are intended as a guideline only.
Training and development
We provide induction training to all new employees shortly after they join. This might include on the job training from experienced staff, our corporate induction course, plus any additional training courses you may need. We encourage employees to continue to pursue training, professional qualifications and professional development.
Our full-time jobs involve 37-40 hours' work a week, Monday to Friday. For some jobs you may also need to work evenings or weekends. A number of flexible working options are available including part-time, flexi-time and job share.
Flexi time scheme
Flexi time enables some employees to work hours which suit their personal lifestyle and commitments. The overriding consideration of the scheme is that it should fit in with the needs of the service you work for.
We support and encourage employees to work in different ways - for example remote or home working, which helps us to have a well-managed council and at the same time balances the needs of employees.
The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is available to all employees under the age of 75. It's a Career Average Revalued Earnings (CARE) scheme and the amount of contribution you pay depends on your earnings (currently between 5.5% and 12.5% of your pensionable pay). If you work part time your rate will be based on the whole time rate for your job. The scheme includes life assurance cover.
Leisure facility discounts
All employees receive a 20% discount on admission fees for council leisure facilities including swimming pools, sports centres, fitness suites and museums, and 10% on the Turkish Baths and Health Spa.
Employees also have the opportunity (subject to availability) to use the council run Coppice Valley Nursery for their own children between three months and five years old. The nursery is run by qualified staff and provides excellent facilities in a friendly and stimulating atmosphere.
We run a salary sacrifice scheme with Computershare Voucher Services where a parent or guardian agrees to take a salary sacrifice in exchange for childcare vouchers.
Employees in posts which have essential car use or an authorised casual car allowance are eligible to apply for a car loan.
Employees who use a bike to travel to and from work or in the course of their duties can get an interest free bicycle loan.
Private medical insurance
We can put you in touch with affordable private medical insurers. There are a number of options depending on the level of protection you want. The subscription is deducted from your salary.
Independent advice and support is available free from Insight, an organisation that offers confidential help on dealing with difficulties that are causing employees concern. It's available for any employee and any family member living in the same household who is over 16.
We operate a no smoking policy in our office buildings and in council owned vehicles with enclosed cabs.
