A policies map is a geographical expression of the policies and proposals in a development plan. It's used to identify areas for protection, such as open space and conservation areas, and the location of sites and particular land uses. It can also show the boundaries of policies which have spatial implications, or areas to which a specific policy applies.

In Harrogate district, the policies map in current use is taken from the 2001 local plan. The map sets out the adopted planning policy for the countryside, nature conservation, green belt, and heritage and design.
