We have a duty to produce air quality reports for the Harrogate district, making sure that we monitor key pollutants that are known to affect the health of people and the environment.

In 2009, we identified two places where the annual target for nitrogen dioxide, which mostly comes from traffic pollution, had been exceeded - in Knaresborough (Bond End) and Ripon (Low and High Skellgate).

In 2010, each site was declared an air quality management area, and an air quality action plan was produced.

In October 2017 we declared two further air quality management areas, due to exceeding the annual target for nitrogen dioxide, at Wetherby Road, Harrogate and York Place, Knaresborough.

A new air quality action plan is currently being drawn up.
