On 3 January 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the successful bids under the Clean Technology Bus Fund 2015. Harrogate Borough Council was successful with a bid in partnership with Harrogate Bus Company and was awarded £237,000 to install clean bus technology on the ten buses used to provide the route one service between Harrogate and Knaresborough.
The equipment to be installed comprises combined selective catalytic reduction technology (SCRT) and particle trap, including an ammonia slip catalyst. The SCRT technology is a proven technology with tested benefits, and has been successfully retrofitted to the same type of buses that operate on route one. This technology works to significantly reduce the amount of NOx (oxides of nitrogen) emitted from the exhaust by over 50% and indications are that reductions could be over 90% on the type of bus that is part of the project.
The buses will also be fitted with electric cooling fan system to offset the reduction in achievable miles per gallon that is likely to be caused as a result of the SCRT technology.
A requirement of the fund was that the buses that will be fitted with the new technology must operate through an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA). Bond End, Knaresborough was declared as an AQMA on 26 November 2010 for having exceeded the annual target for nitrogen dioxide. All route one services operate through Bond End at a regular frequency and the hope is that a potential 90%+ reduction in NOx emissions on the Harrogate Bus Company services can make a substantial improvement to air quality in the area.
Harrogate Bus Company has further supported the work by refurbishing the buses so that they can continue to operate on the route for the next five years, which is a requirement of the funding allocation.

Monitoring of buses to understand the levels of reduction in emissions that have been achieved. This will be carried out during 2017/18.
