A private water supply is any water not provided by a water company and not considered "mains". The water can come from wells, boreholes, springs, rivers, streams, lakes and ponds. We monitor private water supply quality to make sure it's safe.

To protect your water supply you should carry out a risk assessment, monitoring, maintenance and treatment. You should also know your supply, including the source, pipe work and plumbing, and protect your supply at the source.

To register your private water supply, fill in the private water supply questionnaire and send it back to us.

Private water supply regulations

These apply to all private water supplies intended for human use. Details of fees and charges can be found on our private water supply classification and charges page.
