Fabulous Wedding Dresses from the Harrogate Collection
Saturday 13 April to Sunday 15 September 2019
Our wonderful collection of antique and vintage wedding dresses will be on show at the Royal Pump Room Museum this spring/summer.
Spanning almost two centuries of fashion history, Wedding Dresses salutes the wedding dress' steady ascent, as well as unpicking the aesthetic and social ideas sewn into its ruffles and flounces.
For many women, a wedding dress is the most important and expensive garment they will purchase in their lifetime, yet after a single day in the limelight, most are folded away with their stories and memories - never to be worn again.
The Royal Pump Room Museum's rare and inspirational collection of donated dresses offers a glimpse into the lives of the women who wore them, their social circumstances and fashion choices.
This collection of over 35 antique and vintage wedding dresses selected from our wonderful costume collection not only beautifully illustrates how wedding fashion has developed and changed from the Victorian era to present day, but also lays bare some of the real life stories behind the dresses.
Were these gorgeous dresses with their fabulous weddings the foundation of a happy marriage?
The exhibition will also be accompanied by two avant-garde dresses created by contemporary textile artist Julia Triston - the Divorce Dress and the 'We Fade to Grey' Bra-rara Dress.
