Free gallery talks

Daily short introductory talks focusing on particular works in the exhibition, delivered by gallery staff. Learn about Frith's picture making process, the importance of his oil sketches and his constant search for models; he was just as likely to hire a girl selling oranges on the streets to model for him as he was to depict members of high society.


Life drawing
Friday 21 June to 26 July

A six week course of life drawing workshops with artist Nicola Turner, inspired by Frith's approach to drawing from life. These beginner-friendly workshops are an opportunity to develop your observation and drawing skills, working with a professional artist and a model (male and female). We provide all materials, easels and refreshments.

Coffee and culture

Visit the gallery for a free informal welcome session including tea, coffee and cake, and an opportunity to make new friends.

Whether you come on your own or with a friend, we'll guarantee a warm welcome. Let us know what you'd like these sessions to feature, but they might include one of our gallery talks, a look around the gallery, or perhaps a simple making or creative activity.

No need to book, just drop in.


Mindful looking

These free open-to-all mindfulness events led by Kindmind create an opportunity to take time out in the gallery setting, and use mindful techniques to explore an artwork on display. Our first two sessions will explore guided looking at a single work in the gallery. The final session involves moving around several works in the exhibition before coming together at the end to talk about our experiences as a group.

Frith's armchair
Free daily as part of the exhibition, from 27 June to 29 September

The Victorians looked at and studied paintings very differently to audiences today. This mindful looking chair placed within our current exhibition William Powell Frith: The People's Painter will encourage contemporary audiences to take inspiration from Frith's audiences and look closely at a single work on display using simple mindful techniques.

Portrait photography workshop with Jonathan Turner
Saturday 6 July at 11am until 4pm
£20, includes refreshments, participants will make their own lunch arrangements

Photographer Jonathan Turner has recreated some of Frith's famous works featuring the people of Harrogate. In this photography workshop, Jonathan will work with participants to improve their technique. The session will look at composition for portraiture, using both natural light and studio flash. Participants will use each other as subjects, so should be prepared to be photographed!

Curator's talk: Picture making with Mr Frith

Much careful planning and hard work went into the creation of Frith's most famous pictures, sometimes over months or even years. Richard Green FSA, co-curator of the William Powell Frith exhibition, will discuss the artist's progress on specific works from their conception to completion and exhibition.

Booking

All events should be booked in advance by phoning 01423 556188, by emailing museums@harrogate.gov.uk or in person at the Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate. Dates and times may be subject to change. Please confirm details when making a booking.

Payment

All events are priced to cover costs. To confirm your place payment must be made at the time of booking. Tickets will be issued at the time of booking.

Cancellations and refunds

All cancellations must be made 14 days prior to an event to receive a refund. Refunds are only available for sums in excess of £10 due to administrative costs involved. For sums under £10, monies can be held on account against payments for future events.

Please note that all sessions are very popular, often with long reserve lists, so if you cannot attend please notify us straight away so someone else can enjoy the event. If you cancel less than 14 days before an event but we are able to find a replacement the refund policy will apply.

In the event that we have to cancel an event, monies can be held towards future events or a full refund can be provided.
