History

Life and Death in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages

Pupils get up close to archaeological objects to find out how we lived in the early Bronze Age and think about what future archaeologists will find out about us. They will also learn about Bronze Age burials with a hands on activity.

Discover Ancient Greece

Uncover the treasures of Ancient Greek civilisations with our hands-on workshop with real objects. Use the objects to discover how the Ancient Greeks lived, their beliefs and later enjoy some role-play to learn about some of their many myths and legends.

Egyptology: Scientific Investigation

Pupils learn about archaeology and what it tells us about the past through handling real Egyptian objects. They will also use our mummy doll for hands-on discovery about the mummification process.

Home of the Healing Waters – Harrogate’s spa history

Pupils will become a Harrogate spa visitor, and discover what treatments would have helped their illness from our very own Lady (or gentleman) of the Wells!  They will visit the Old Sulphur Well, enjoy some drama and class competition as they see which team can answer the most questions to discover all about Harrogate’s famous visitors, spa treatments and how the town was in its spa heyday.  They will also enjoy a trail around the beautiful spa buildings near the museum.

Leisure and Entertainment in 19th and 20th centuries

Get up close to some of our more mysterious objects in this handling session to learn about the impact of labour saving devices and new technologies on our leisure time.  There will be a focus on how Harrogate has changed from spa to a conference town whilst also considering the social and legal changes that gave us holidays and money to spend on fun!

Toys Through Time

Discover how toys have developed since Ancient times.  Handle 19th and 20th century toys and games and compare them to those of today.  Make a peg doll toy to take away.

Discovering Jewellery

Recently developed to support the study of Aztec jewellery for a local school, this  half day workshop looking at different styles of jewellery from the past both through handling, spending time at the museum and then sketching your own jewellery design.

SCIENCE 

Crime Scene Investigators!

Who poisoned Harrogate’s spa water? Solve this 120-year-old crime using real-life forensic investigative techniques including blood tests, fingerprinting and chromatography to discover the culprit. Sleuthing pupils will also role-play the suspects to consider their alibis and motives.

Knaresborough Castle

 An Overview of Castles

A chance to explore Knaresborough Castle - the Keep, dungeon and underground sallyport - to discover its history, the royals who built it and its typical castle features.  Imagine what the Castle used to look like by finding out about the people who lived and worked there. 

Younger pupils will discover the local people from the past inside the museum and create some shields while older ones can work out how to create their own simple siege engine and test its firepower!

A dramatic journey through Knaresborough Castle where pupils will discover the terrible tales associated with the castle and then create their own.

Pupils will go on a tour to look how castles were defended and attacked  before going on to make their own simple siege engine and testing their firepower!

Crime and Punishment  Through the Ages-living history

A role-play session in our Tudor courtroom where pupils will take a journey through the changes in crime and punishment, focusing on comparisons between Tudor times and 21st century.  6 Tudor trial role-plays are available for preparing in advance and performing with our Tudor court official overseeing the events!

Tudor Rich and Poor 

Explore a time capsule left by Tudor children - rich boy Ed and poor girl Kathryn.  Compare the two children’s possessions which include clothes, toys, coins, food, writing instruments and household objects, to understand how rich and poor people lived in Tudor times.

In this workshop pupils will discover some of the art in the collection painted at Knaresborough Castle across the centuries and enjoy a tour of the Castle before creating their own sketches.  A town tour of sites painted by 20th century Knaresborough artist Joseph Baker Fountain will give more insight into artists who have been inspired by the town.

Welcome to the art gallery

What is an art gallery?  What can we see there?  This session is designed to introduce younger pupils to an art gallery, discover the different artists, media and techniques on show.

The session can be extended to a half day (2-2.5 hours) to include some messy artwork in our activities room, either led by you at a cost of £40 to cover resources or £50 to cover staffing as well. 

1-1.5 hour session for £30.

Ideal for Reception/Key Stage 1.

Every Picture Tells a Story

Pupils will be given full freedom to explore the art on show, and use their chosen artwork to inspire creative writing in the form of a simple poem, story, a factual report or a storyboard.  A workshop that gives a real chance to use the imagination without restriction.

The People's Choice: Analysing Art

Pupils are encouraged to critique the art on show. Using the language of art, craft and design pupils will analyse the creative works. They will also develop their debating and public speaking skills in group discussions.
