History

All our history workshops use museum objects to introduce new language and encourage enquiry, investigation, discussion and teamwork.

Ancient Egypt Explorers

Handle real Ancient Egyptian objects; explore the museum displays, dress up, investigate interactive objects and mummify our doll to find out how the Ancient Egyptians lived, and their beliefs for the Afterlife.

Ancient Greeks

Your class will discover how the Ancient Greeks lived and how they influenced the wider world, through handling museum objects and visiting the museum. A dramatic afternoon follows exploring the myths and legends!

Life and Death in the Stone and Bronze Ages

Pupils will handle museum objects to explore life in this period. They will become archaeologists to discover how things we leave behind help us discover what life used to be like, and have a go at some Bronze Age crafts.

Discover Knaresborough Castle

This workshop is tailored for the age group.

All pupils will enjoy a guided tour of the remains of the King's Tower, dungeon and sallyport (medieval underground tunnel).

Your visit can then be completed with:

  • explore trail for the museum (FS/KS1)
  • who lived here? stories trail (KS2)
  • design a Coat of Arms
  • can you build a catapult? (KS1-3)
  • colourful characters tour of the castle grounds to discover the buildings and people who lived and worked there in its medieval heyday
  • “order!” role play drama in the Tudor Courtroom (KS2)

Toys Through Time

Handle old and new toys to find out how children used to play, how toys have changed through new materials and technologies.

FS - children handle objects effectively; children talk about past and present events in their lives
KS1 History - understanding historical concepts such as similarity and difference between ways of life in different periods, ask and answer questions and understand ways we find out about the past.

History of Harrogate

Pupils play the part of spa visitors searching for a cure in this interactive workshop telling the stories of Harrogate's past. Enjoy a tour of the local area to discover more about how Harrogate developed and has changed over the years.

Crime and Punishment Through the Ages

Using courtroom scripts, pupils will act out trials from different periods to gain an understanding of how our justice system has evolved over the centuries.

Leisure and Entertainment in the 19th and 20th Century

Get up close to some of our more mysterious objects in this handling session to learn how new discoveries and technologies have given us more time for leisure and entertainment, and changed the activities we enjoy.

Art

Welcome to the Art Gallery

A chance to showcase what art galleries offer by exploring the art and artists on show and having the opportunity to sketch the artwork. The session can be extended to include an art activity in our Studio.

Art Detectives

A workshop to raising confidence in talking about and exploring art. Pupils will be guided through how to describe, analyse and critique the art on show, discuss and form and share opinions.

What's the Story? Creative Writing at the Gallery and Museum

Using the artwork on show and museum objects to inspire creative writing. Pupils will create characters and construct the beginning, middle and end of narratives, think about descriptive and engaging language used to create successful stories.

From Turner to Today: Inspired by Knaresborough Castle

This stunning location has inspired artists for centuries. Pupils will be guided through a variety of artists' works, and then create their own using a wide range of art materials. The afternoon activity provides the opportunity to tour the locations of local 20th century artist Joseph Baker Fountain.

Science

Crime Scene Investigators

Who poisoned Harrogate's spa water? Solve this 120-year-old crime using real-life forensic investigative techniques including blood tests, fingerprinting and chromatography. Sleuthing pupils will also role-play the suspects to consider their alibis and motives.

Science and Nature at Knaresborough Castle

This workshop will look at the science behind castle construction, siege weaponry and the challenges to diet and health in Medieval times. Pupils will make their own clinometers and catapults, explore how food was grown, stored and used and take away their own seed pots to nurture at home.

Water is Good For You!

This workshop teaches the importance of water for our health and wellbeing. Focusing on Harrogate's spa waters, it will examine the geology behind Harrogate's many sources of water, complete experiments on the different waters and discover the wells and spa treatments used in the past.

Practical information

The maximum class size at any one time is 35 for the Mercer Art Gallery and Royal Pump Room Museum, Harrogate. It is possible to have up to 60 (2 classes) at Knaresborough Castle and Museum. However, please contact us to work out the best way to organise a visit for your group, whatever the size.

Timings
Half and full day workshops are available. Exact times are arranged with each school to suit your travel times and school days.

Costs per class
Entirely teacher-led visits to the Mercer Art Gallery and across our venues for schools within the Harrogate district are free.
£65 half day workshop
£120 full day workshop
£40 for 1 hour

Additional costs apply to visits to Knaresborough Castle during our closed season (September until Easter) to cover staff costs - £110 for half a day or £185 for a full day.

We have a dedicated Education Room in Harrogate and Knaresborough. This can also be used as a lunch space, with outdoors spaces available for better weather.
