What we do

We are the local council for the Harrogate district.

We are responsible for providing local services to 160,000 people in six main towns and hundreds of villages. Our services include waste collection, housing, planning and development, sport leisure and culture, licensing, business investment, the unique Turkish Baths Harrogate, welfare services and stunning parks and open spaces.

Our aim is to be a council that is customer focussed, commercially driven and fit for the future. Our four corporate themes include:

  • a strong local economy
  • supporting our communities
  • providing excellent public services
  • a sustainable environment

We employ around 1,000 highly skilled, experienced and dedicated people. Our modern, purpose-built, civic centre is based in the centre of Harrogate, but we operate from a number of other sites across the district.

We are an ambitious, forward thinking and progressive council that has recently hosted major international sporting events such as the UCI Road World Cycling Championships.

Our development plans have a commercial edge such as the redevelopment of Harrogate Convention Centre, the creation of a sport and leisure company and a new destination management organisation.

We're in the middle of an ambitious transformation programme to shape the future of the district and services we provide to ensure they continue to be valued and appreciated by our residents. To support these services, we also have colleagues working in roles including finance, marketing and communications, Human Resources, ICT, customer services, legal services and more. Our values are:

  • delivering excellent customer service
  • taking responsibility
  • showing resilience
  • working together
  • leading by example
