New Fit4Life programme launched to help men achieve healthy weight loss

Brimhams Active has launched a new weight management programme specifically targeted at men to promote healthy eating and physical activity to help achieve healthy weight loss.

Harrogate Borough Council's health and wellbeing company has been running Fit4Life across the Harrogate district for some time. But has this week they have launched a FREE programme designed specifically for men.

Funded through North Yorkshire County Council, the 12-week programme starts on Monday 28 March and takes place once a week at Jennyfield Styan Community Centre in Harrogate from 7.30pm to 9pm. The first half of the session will involve an exercise class followed by nutrition advice.

Brimhams Active's qualified health and exercise experts will use a variety of techniques to teach residents about food choices to change their current behaviour and develop a healthy relationship with food while introducing exercises to help in the weight loss journey.

The programme will provide information and guidance about:

  • goal setting and eating awareness
  • dieting and myth bunking
  • meal planning, portion sizes and shopping guidance
  • tailored physical activity to help achieve weight loss

To join the programme you must fit the following criteria:

  • be aged 18 and over
  • have a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30 kg/m2 (25 BMI if you have comorbidities or are from BAME group)
  • remain committed to the 12-week programme
  • be willing to commit to losing five per cent of body weight
  • and have no uncontrolled comorbidities

Matthew O'Sullivan, health and wellbeing development officer, said: "Fit4Life is a fantastic weight management programme and we've had some really successful stories of people losing weight but more importantly completely changing their lifestyles for the better.

"And when they've gone back to their GP for a check-up, the GP has been absolutely delighted because they've lost this weight, their blood sugar levels have come down, their medication gets reduced or stops completely and their life has been transformed.

"We know men might be reluctant to attend a mixed Fit4Life session so have decided to launch a specific session on a Monday evening in Harrogate that will be really informal and a chance to take part in an exercise class as well as learn about to achieve healthy weight loss."

Paul, who has previously taken part in the Fit4Life programme, said: "I was anxious and uneasy to start with, but seeing my weight loss for the first time in a few weeks really helped motivate me along with the kind, friendly Fit4Life team who kept encouraging and supporting me."

The 12-week programme is free to join and anyone interested can book a place by phoning 01423 556106 or emailing: active.health@brimhamsactive.co.uk.

Other Fit4Life courses take place across the Harrogate district and are suitable for anyone - who meets the above criteria - who want to achieve healthy weight loss. Further details are available at: www.brimhamsactive.co.uk/fit4life-project.
