The government wants to enable more people to build their own homes. We would like to find out how many people are actively seeking land to build a home in the Harrogate district.
We also want to gather information on where people are with their self-build journey to better tailor our approach.
What is self-build and custom housebuilding?
Self-build is where someone directly plans the design and construction of their own home. Finding and buying the plot of land and either physically undertaking the work themselves as a 'DIY' project or arranging for a contractor to build their own home for them.
Custom build projects are where someone works with a specialist developer to deliver their new home. In this scenario, the custom builder may secure the site for you and manage the build of your home.
Registering with the council
We are required to develop a register of people who are seeking land to build a home, in line with the Self Build Act 2015 and The Self-build and Custom Housebuilding (Register) Regulations 2016.
Please note that we have revised our processes in line with latest national guidance, as well as introducing a fee to cover the costs for additional administration. For more information please see our self and custom build register guidance.
If you wish to make an application for entry in the register please complete the following application
Eligibility for entry in either part one or part two of the register is set out in The Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Regulations 2016 Regulation 4 which can be viewed online at www.legislation.gov.uk
Local eligibility criteria for entry onto part one of the register is set out in the self and custom housebuilding register guidance
If you are already on our register you don't need to re-apply.
