If you live in a known flood risk area, you may be able to register for warnings at www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings

Preparing for flooding

  • keep flood water out - if you live in a known flood risk area, fit flood doors and/or boards
  • move people, valuables and pets to a safe place
  • get your grab bag
  • check on any vulnerable neighbours
  • keep informed through local radio or the Environment Agency (EA) Floodline on 0345 988 1188

During flooding

  • stay out of flood water
  • keep dry and safe
  • let people know where you are if your property become isolated
  • keep informed through local radio or the Environment Agency (EA) Floodline on 0345 988 1188
  • if possible, keep a record of the flooding by taking pictures of water levels and damage

After flooding

  • contact your insurers and follow their advice
  • get any affected utilities checked
  • get rid of any food that may have become contaminated
  • ventilate the property
  • get medical help if any health issues arise

Driving in flood

  • plan your journey and try to avoid driving through flood water
  • don't enter flood water that is moving or more than 10cms (four inches) deep
  • don't try to drive through the water if you're not sure how deep it is
  • if you do go through flood water, drive on the highest section of the road (normally in the centre or along the highest kerb)
  • allow oncoming traffic to pass first - make sure you have a clear route ahead so you don't have to stop in standing water
  • drive steadily and slowly so you don't make waves
